It’s Time For a Mindset Reset

It is time for a mindset reset! Some of you had an amazing year in business. You leveled up and achieved your goals and objectives you had set for yourself personally and professionally. If that was you, I am celebrating your wins!

But, for many of you, the last year did not spare you trials and challenges that affected your ability to grow your business or take care of yourself as a small business owner. Maybe it’s been a difficult couple of years for you. The COVID shutdown sucked the life out of small businesses and there has been talk of a looming recession since then. Did you get divorced? Have a miscarriage? Lose a parent or loved one? See massive decrease in sales? Couldn’t pay your bills? There are so many things that could have made the last year difficult.

Together let’s reset for the new year but I don’t think you should go at it alone! You have so much to gain when you add these three professionals to your team this year.

Mindset Reset: Every Business Owner Needs a Therapist

Business owners are not exempt from trauma, grief, trials and challenges. As a matter of fact, entrepreneurs suffer from mental illness at higher rates than traditional workers. According to a study by Michael Freeman, entrepreneurs and founders are 50% more likely to report having a mental health condition. According to the research discovered in the study entrepreneurs are:

  • 2X more likely to suffer from depression
  • 6X more likely to suffer from ADHD
  • 3X more likely to suffer from substance abuse
  • 10X more likely to suffer from bipolar disorder

Stress is the number one cause of mental health challenges in small business owners. It is not uncommon for business owners to lose sleep, skip meals and ignore overall self care routines. Business ownership comes with a constant pressure to succeed. The constant pressure while juggling multiple departments often leads to burnout and in many cases severe mental health crises.

With the ups and downs associated with entrepreneurship, it is critical to practice self-care. Your mental health will play a key role in making healthy decisions for your business and so much more.

“Preparing the mind, body and spirit for entrepreneurship is like preparing the mind, body and spirit for the Olympics.” Suzanne Mulvehill, Employee to Entrepreneur

If you are struggling with your mental health, seek the help of a therapist right away. If you are doing well, acknowledge the risks, eliminate the stigma and take preventative action around your mental health.

Hire an Assistant: Delegate, Delegate, Delegate

I struggled to find time to take care of myself. I even failed to tend to basic needs like getting regular sleep, eating healthy meals and moving my body because I . It took a complete mental breakdown for me to see how much time I was spending on managing administrative processes in my business. If you do not have an assistant you are likely working countless hours at a high rate of pay to sacrifice your mental health and well being.

Stop trying to do it all. This may be the best advice you will receive all year. You are not good at everything and that is okay. It’s time to delegate parts of your job that someone else may be more efficient at! Hand off your administrative duties so you can focus on profitable areas of your business, growing as a leader and prioritizing self care.

It’s Time for a Mindset Reset

Hey fellow business owners and entrepreneurs, I had a tough year myself. As a matter of fact, as a team we embraced grief and trauma like never before over the last 12 months. While my mental health was challenged in ways I could not have seen coming, I can also look back and see ways I could have been preventative. That doesn’t mean that there were ways I could have stopped the challenging events from occurring, but I could have been developing coping skills over the years that would have helped me get through this season with a lot less drama.

It’s time for a mindset reset fellow entrepreneurs! Gather up your community, get a therapist, delegate the tasks that are sucking the life out of you and hire a dang business coach. They will celebrate with you when you win, cheer you on when it’s hard, and they will walk with you when the going gets tough again. It’s time to reflect on last year and put that chapter behind you. Be sure to celebrate the wins and let’s open page number one of the next book.

You worked hard and you deserve every bit of success you have experienced. Also, if you haven’t already, make sure you work through your strategic plan and assess your SMART goals for next year.
